Botox® in San Francisco by Dermatology Medical Group

Botox® Cosmetic is a safe, non-surgical way to soften wrinkles caused by muscle activity. It is most effective on the “11 lines” between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, forehead creases, and fine lines around the mouth.

At Dermatology Medical Group of San Francisco, our board-certified dermatologists handle all consultations and treatments. They have undergone thorough training from Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox®, and they have extensive knowledge of how this product works with the muscles and skin to smooth wrinkles. For an ideal result, precise placement and dosage are essential. We are one of Allergan’s most notable clients in this area, so our doctors administer Botox® injections regularly.

Botox® consists of a purified form of botulinum toxin, a safe protein in the small doses given in the injections. Health providers have used this substance for many years to treat muscle spasms in children and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Botox® is not effective on all types of wrinkles. Signs of aging caused by loss of volume require dermal filler injections, such as Juvéderm®Voluma, and Restylane®. For sagging upper eyelids or jowls, we recommend an Ulthera® treatment, while Kybella® is the best solution for a double chin.

An extensive examination and detailed medical history will determine if you are a good candidate for Botox® or if the condition you wish to improve would respond better to a dermal filler, Ulthera®, or Kybella®.

The effects of Botox® last about four months, so most people have three treatments annually.

The San Francisco Botox® Treatment

Our physicians administer Botox® with a fine needle to reduce discomfort. If you choose, we can also apply numbing cream before your injections. The cream takes at least a half-hour to take effect, and the injections themselves take only a few minutes.

After your treatment, we will apply ice for a short time before you leave. Then, you can do anything you like – return to work or any other activities. You will begin to see results within a week to 10 days.

Recovering From San Francisco Botox® Injections

While most patients experience slight bruising and tenderness for a couple of days, there are no restrictions on your activities after Botox® injections. You can use makeup right away to cover any discoloration.

You might also feel tender at the injection sites for a week or two. If the pain is bothersome, over-the-counter medication should provide sufficient relief.

San Francisco Botox® FAQs

What does a Botox® treatment feel like?

Botox® injections are quick with minimal discomfort. The treatment requires no anesthesia or recovery. Many patients get Botox® during their lunch break, returning to work after their appointment.

Are Botox® injections painful?

Botox® injections are highly tolerable. Most of our patients report brief discomfort during the injection, which subsides once your treatment is over.

How soon will I realize my results?

While each patient’s experience may differ, it usually takes three to five days to see the effects of Botox®. For some, it may take up to two weeks to realize the best outcome.

How long do Botox® benefits last?

The results of Botox® typically last between three to five months from the injection date. Over time, the body will metabolize the product, leading to muscle movement return in the treatment site. Patients can prolong their Botox® benefits by undergoing maintenance treatments every three to four months.

When should I start Botox® treatments?

There is no ideal age to start Botox® treatments. A consultation and evaluation by a board-certified dermatologist can tell you if this treatment would benefit you. We’re increasingly working with younger patients beginning to use Botox® in their 20s when they notice emerging lines and wrinkles.

Is Botox® safe?

Botox® is an FDA-approved injectable treatment for reversing dynamic wrinkles and lines. However, patients currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neurological diseases should not consider Botox® injections.

Are there side effects?

Side effects from Botox® injections are minimal when you have your treatment performed by a trained, experienced injector. You may have tenderness, redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. These should resolve within a week.
