A divorce is a significant decision that signals a new phase of your life. It’s understandable you would want to improve your appearance after ending your marriage – not only because you want to feel like you’re making a fresh start, but also because you’re planning on reentering the dating world and want to put your best face forward. Here’s a closer look at some of the most popular minimally invasive procedures that Dr. Matarasso’s newly single clients request.

1. Liquid Facelift

If you are concerned about mild to moderate signs of facial aging, but aren’t willing to undergo an invasive surgery such as a facelift, you have another option. The term “liquid facelift” refers to using neuromodulators such as Botox® in conjunction with dermal fillers like Juvéderm to remove wrinkles and improve facial volume.

Botox creates temporary paralysis in the muscles around the eyes and eyebrow area, improving crow’s feet, brow furrows, and the “11 lines” between the eyebrows. It relaxes existing wrinkles and helps prevent new ones from forming. Fillers can also add subtle volume and contour to the cheeks and lips while erasing the fine lines around the mouth.

There’s no downtime, stitches, or anesthesia involved with a liquid facelift, and you don’t have to take time away from work or other regular activities. It’s easy to maintain your long-term results by returning to our office for periodic touch-up treatments a couple of times a year.

2. PRP Facial

The PRP facial, commonly nicknamed the “vampire facial” on social media, combines the healing factors present in your plasma with the collagen-inducing benefits of microneedling for incredible results.

First, we perform the microneedling procedure to create thousands of microscopic puncture wounds in your face. Then, we spread platelet-rich plasma drawn from your blood over the skin. The platelets are rich in nutrients that penetrate deeply into the dermis, where they provide anti-aging benefits and improve your skin’s quality from within. The result will be a brighter, softer, smoother complexion.

3. CoolSculpting®

We’d all like to attain a slimmer silhouette, but often, your efforts in the gym aren’t enough to banish the bulges of unwanted fat from problem areas such as your belly, buttocks, thighs, and upper arms. CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved procedure that uses controlled cooling to freeze fat cells and cause them to die off. After your body naturally flushes out the dead cells, they’ll be gone for good, leaving you with a leaner and more toned physique.

4. Hair Restoration

Society puts tremendous pressure on people to look young and vital at any age. Unfortunately, many men and women experience hair thinning and premature hair loss that makes them appear older and less vibrant. A hair transplant can help you regrow a thicker, fuller head of hair so you can stop hiding your degree of hair loss with hats, scarves, and wigs.

Using an advanced technique called follicular unit extraction, Dr. Matarasso takes tiny bundles of one to four hairs from a “donor” area where you have plenty of hair – such as the back or sides of your head – and carefully inserts them into the balding areas. Once the transplanted hair takes root and enters the normal hair growth cycle, you can expect to see more hair density within a year after your procedure.

5. Ultherapy®

Ultherapy is an FDA-cleared technique that can tighten loose skin from your forehead to your décolletage, with no need for surgery. This revolutionary procedure stimulates new collagen growth with ultrasound energy, which helps kick your healing process into high gear. Over the next two to three months, you’ll notice the firming and tightening of sagging skin.

“Flattening the curve” to keep ourselves and our communities healthy has left many of us unable to visit our favorite salons and spas. As a result, you may be missing the pampering you’re used to and wondering if you can replicate it from the comfort of your home. We’re here to help!

As a clinical professor of dermatology, Dr. Seth Matarasso has assembled some top tips on how you can use this extra time to keep up with your beauty routine and emerge from isolation ready to face the world.

Establish a Skin Care Standard

For people who habitually get cosmetic treatments such as laser skin resurfacing or microdermabrasion, take advantage of this opportunity to get into a regular home skin care routine. Contrary to what you might think, taking good care of your skin doesn’t have to be complicated or involve multiple products. Cleanse your skin every morning and evening, and follow it up with a gentle, lightweight moisturizer. If you’re going outside or sitting near a window, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen if your moisturizer doesn’t already include it. Also, don’t over-exfoliate, as micro-tears in your skin will cause irritation.

Get Plenty of Sleep

There’s a good reason we call it “beauty sleep.” While you’re asleep, your body uses that time to repair damaged cells and replenish your energy. Give yourself the rest you deserve and help eliminate puffiness and dark undereye circles by getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night.

Don’t Forget to Hydrate

Your skin needs moisture to retain its elasticity and help prevent the signs of premature aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles. In addition to your daily application of moisturizer, drink plenty of water. If you’re thirsty, that means you’re already dehydrated, so always keep a glass of water within reach. You can also get water from moisture-rich foods such as cucumber, lettuce, strawberries, and melons. As a bonus, you’ll be eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables with this approach.

Go Makeup-Free

If you aren’t leaving the house, choose the bare-faced route and give your skin a break from pore-clogging makeup. Not only will this allow your skin a chance to breathe and reduce the potential for breakouts, but it will also reduce the number of potentially hazardous chemicals you expose yourself to.

Make a DIY Face Mask

For an anti-aging DIY face mask, combine yogurt with honey to gently remove dead skin cells and make your complexion look softer and smoother. Mix one tablespoon of honey with two tablespoons of plain, unflavored Greek yogurt. Smooth onto your face and let it dry for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water.

San Francisco’s Skin Care Expert

Whether your dermatological needs are cosmetic or clinical in nature, Dr. Matarasso is here to help you achieve your healthiest glow. If you live in the greater San Francisco area, schedule your consultation today by calling us at 415-362-2238.
The post Expert Tips on How to Maintain Your Beauty Routine From Home first appeared on Dr. Seth L.

Anyone of any age can develop spider veins – web-like blood vessels (capillaries) that appear just beneath the surface of the skin. However, some people may have a higher chance of getting them than others. Common causes of facial spider veins include genes, sun damage, weather changes, pregnancy, environmental pollution, alcohol use, and rosacea.

Broken capillaries are not harmful or painful, but they can be an unsightly and embarrassing cosmetic concern. If you feel your spider veins are detracting from your appearance, Dr. Matarasso offers a reliable remedy.

How to Get Rid of Spider Veins

Are prominent facial veins affecting your quality of life? The good news is that they are treatable. For example, photofacials with lasers or intense pulsed light (IPL) is an excellent way to stop spider veins and many other skin imperfections such as hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, scars, and enlarged pores.

IPL and lasers use rapid flashes of light to destroy broken blood vessels. They are a safe, non-invasive and brief way to get smoother skin permanently, with zero downtime. Photorejuvenation treatments are ideal for people who have a goal of refining skin texture and evening out skin discoloration caused by sun damage, aging, acne, rosacea, damaged blood vessels, enlarged pores, and fine lines. All skin tones and types can benefit from using IPL to correct these types of concerns.

Stop Spider Veins From Returning

If your broken capillaries come back, you can get additional laser or IPL treatments to stop spider veins from re-emerging. It is safe to have periodic maintenance treatments several times per year, as Dr. Matarasso recommends.

Additional ways to stop spider veins from re-emerging include the following.

Protect Your Skin From Sun Exposure

Sunscreen is the ultimate secret weapon against premature aging and damaged skin, but it’s especially valuable after laser and IPL therapy, both of which will make your skin more sensitive to the sun’s UV rays anyway. You will need to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every time you go outside. Since sun damage is one of the causes of broken capillaries, you can improve the overall quality of your skin and prevent the formation of new spider veins by using sunblock diligently.

Avoid Extreme Heat

Blood vessel dilation can result from overheating. Always wash your face in lukewarm water, instead of hot water. When you shower, try to keep your face out of the stream of heated water. If there is high heat in the forecast, stay indoors. Steer clear of spas or saunas.

Only Drink Alcohol in Moderation

Alcohol use can cause your blood vessels to enlarge. Heavy drinking can eventually lead to the development of spider veins on your face. Ask your doctor if you need alternative strategies to help you drink less often.

Exfoliate Gently

Elbow grease may be what the doctor ordered when you’re cleaning up kitchen messes, but it’s not good to go overboard when cleaning your face. Ease up on the pressure, and don’t use an overly gritty exfoliant to clear your pores of impurities.

Stop Spider Veins in San Francisco

Broken capillaries can put a dent in your self-esteem, but you can stop them from being a concern in your life with a visit to Dr. Matarasso. As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Matarasso offers some of the most sought-after procedures for treating skin concerns such as spider veins, discoloration, and uneven skin texture. Schedule your consultation today to learn more about how to put spider veins behind you.
The post How to Stop Spider Veins From Resurfacing first appeared on Dr. Seth L.

Wrinkles, both fine and pronounced, are the visible signs of how your face changes as you age. While we all want to age as gracefully as possible, wrinkles can often confound our ability to maintain a youthful appearance. Today, we’ll look at the two different categories of wrinkles, why they form, and what you can do about them.

What Are Dynamic Wrinkles?

Younger people’s skin returns to its original position after frowning, smiling, and squinting, but as we get older, wrinkles like the “eleven lines” between your brows and the nasolabial folds that bracket your mouth stay with us. These so-called dynamic wrinkles are gradually formed each time you make facial expressions. For example, people who work outdoors may need to squint in bright sunlight, causing the skin at the corners of their eyes to fold. Or, you might find yourself frowning in concentration during a meeting at work or when you are doing a complicated task.

What Are Static Wrinkles?

As we age, we experience a decline in the production of substances that naturally provide structure and volume in our skin, such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin. This decline leads to the gradual sagging and a loss of firmness in our skin. Eventually, we develop static wrinkles like brow furrows and crow’s feet, which remain visible on our faces even when we are at rest and making a neutral expression.

Your Options for Treating Dynamic and Static Wrinkles

Developing wrinkles is inevitable, but you may be looking for ways to reverse the pronounced effects of aging so you can look younger and more vibrant. The good news is that there are several minimally-invasive products you can use to achieve your anti-aging goals and reduce the appearance of both dynamic and static wrinkles.

The Solution to Dynamic Wrinkles

Botox® and Dysport are versatile products with a range of medical applications. When used for aesthetic reasons, Botox and Dysport can help smooth creases and wrinkles that form due to repetitive muscle movements. Both products use a purified form of botulinum toxin to create temporary paralysis in the small muscles around the eyes and between the eyebrows.

During the three to five months Botox and Dysport remain in effect, you will not be able to make the facial expressions that create dynamic wrinkles in the upper third of your face. Though it is an extreme stereotype that your face will appear “frozen” after getting Botox and Dysport injections, you will enjoy a reduction in the appearance of crow’s feet, worry lines, and brow furrows, thanks to these products’ ability to relax the muscles that create those wrinkles. Neuromodulators also help prevent new wrinkles from forming over time.

How to Correct Static Wrinkles

Injectable dermal fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane® are top choices for smoothing static wrinkles. These products rely on hyaluronic acid to safely and effectively add volume to lips and cheeks, and fill in wrinkles such as the parentheses and marionette lines that form around your mouth.

With the right combination and amount of dermal fillers applied in targeted areas where you are experiencing noticeable lines and wrinkles, you can expect to see an immediate improvement with zero downtime and effects that last between six and 12 months. Combining dermal fillers and Botox or Dysport can give you complete rejuvenation of your entire face and make you look younger and more refreshed without the need for surgery, stitches, scars, or a long and painful recovery process.

How to Avoid Wrinkles and Maintain Your Results

Though some degree of wrinkling is unavoidable, static wrinkles can be prevented through the use of the right cleanser and moisturizer for your skin type. Additionally, not smoking, drinking plenty of water, and staying out of the sun will help to maintain a wrinkle-free face. Meanwhile, the only way to avoid the formation of dynamic wrinkles is to limit the facial expressions you make, which can be challenging because we often frown, smile, or squint unconsciously.

When it comes to making a healthy skin care routine, your face takes priority. Not only is it the most visible and prominent area of your skin, it also develops wrinkles more quickly than other areas of your body due to the amount of fine muscle movement eroding its elasticity, so clearly, it needs the most attention.

Unfortunately, for many, their face is the beginning and end of skin care planning. However, since your skin is your largest organ and your first line of protection against the risks of the world around you, plenty of other places on your body need just as much attention to detail as your face.

Hands

Your hands are one of the most incredible parts of your body, and over your life, you will use them for hundreds of everyday tasks. However, we often take the skin on our hands for granted. When it gets dry, we often forget to moisturize until skin becomes painful and cracked. Many of us overlook the need to apply sunscreen to the backs of our hands as well, which means they could suffer more sun damage than the rest of your body.

If your hands are showing wrinkles, volume loss, age spots, and other signs of premature aging, don’t fret – you have options. For example, Fraxel is a laser treatment that can turn back the clock on your hands, erasing discoloration, uneven skin tone, and scarring. It will also stimulate your body’s natural collagen production, encouraging your skin to make more of this structural protein that is so essential to healthy skin.

Cosmetic fillers like those in the Juvéderm family can also help improve the appearance of the backs of hands that have become sunken or bony due to age-related tissue loss. With nearly immediate results, minimal risks and side effects, and no downtime for recovery, Juvéderm is undoubtedly a skin care tool to add to your arsenal.

Décolleté

It’s all too easy to overlook skin care for the chest, but it’s certainly an area that deserves protection and treating since it often gets just as much damaging UV exposure as your face. Décolleté, meaning “lower neck” in French, is a term that describes the skin stretching from your cleavage to your collarbone. Even people who have diligently followed a skin care regimen may have a dramatic difference in the degree of aging between their face and décolleté.

Some of this is because most people’s skincare routine doesn’t extend beyond their faces – but beyond that, this area often ages more rapidly than any other part of the body, even for those who take good care of the skin on their chest.

What’s the reason for this difference? The skin covering the décolleté is thinner and has fewer oil glands than most other parts of your body, making it more sensitive to irritation and sun damage. The thin skin on your décolleté is even more sensitive than your facial skin, so it requires at least as much attention. For patients who are concerned about premature aging on their décolleté, we recommend non-invasive procedures such as microdermabrasion and Ultherapy to smooth out skin and jumpstart collagen production.

Neck

Most of us know about the benefits of cleansing, moisturizing, exfoliating, and applying sunscreen to our faces, but unfortunately, many people’s skincare regimen stops at their jawline. As a result, neck skin is often one of the first areas where the obvious signs of aging like sagging and wrinkling become evident. Unless you are a fan of turtleneck sweaters, most clothing doesn’t do much to cover up your neck, which exposes it to sun damage year-round. If you aren’t diligent about protecting the skin on your neck, you may wake up one morning to realize your neck looks several years older than your face.

In addition to making sure to start including your neck in your daily efforts to keep your skin clean, hydrated, and free of impurities, you can get laser treatments such as IPL to enhance the look of your neck and bring it in line with the appearance of your face.

By now, you’ve probably read at least one rave review about hyaluronic acid in your favorite blog or magazine. Hyaluronic acid has been making waves in recent years for its incredible anti-aging properties. If you’re not familiar with what it does, don’t let the term “acid” fool you – it’s not an exfoliant or skin peel, as you might initially assume. Instead, hyaluronic acid is a superpowered moisturizer that can bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

The Basics of Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid works like a sponge to soak in and retain hydration from the environment. Best of all, it’s a substance your skin will willingly accept since your body already produces it naturally to keep your skin hydrated and elastic. That’s why hyaluronic acid benefits all ages, skin tones, and types.

As you age, you produce less and less hyaluronic acid, leading to troublesome signs of aging such as fine lines and lost facial volume. If you want to get more hyaluronic acid, you may be excited to learn that many popular anti-aging products include it as a key ingredient. You can apply these creams and serums topically to maintain a youthful complexion—though the results of these treatments are short-term. If you’re looking to achieve more long-lasting results with hyaluronic acid, cosmetic fillers are your best bet.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Injectable skin fillers made with hyaluronic acid have become a go-to treatment among patients and doctors alike. They are available in different formulations that allow a skilled dermatologist to erase fine lines and plump up cheeks and lips. Injecting hyaluronic acid not only improves skin’s moisture barrier, but it also stimulates more collagen and elastin production.

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers have experienced a meteoric rise in fame, with everyone from celebs to schoolteachers embracing the treatments. Fillers are especially popular, because they are quick, relatively painless, minimally invasive, and provide instantly visible results with little to no downtime and no risk of allergic reaction.

Here are our favorite hyaluronic acid skin fillers:

Juvéderm – A non-animal-based, biocompatible option, the Juvéderm family of products is available in three different formulas, which are optimized for the depth of the area being treated. Juvéderm is effective at filling in fine lines around the mouth and eyes as well as adding contour to lips and cheeks. Juvéderm Voluma XC is specifically designed for filling in volume in the cheek area.

Restylane – Restylane products are designed to address more severe facial wrinkles and volume loss, and are suitable for deeper injection into facial tissue. The Restylane line is specially formulated not just for filling in wrinkles, but also for plumping up lips, cheeks, and the backs of hands that may have developed a bony appearance due to the aging process.

Though the effects of hyaluronic acid fillers are not permanent, they are long-lasting, and easy to maintain with periodic touch-up treatments.

Side Effects of Skin Fillers

One thing many patients appreciate about dermal fillers is how easily they fit into a busy lifestyle. The injections take place during a brief, easy in-office procedure. Immediately after your treatment, you may apply makeup, return to work, and resume your normal daily schedule.

The most common side effects of hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary and include swelling, bruising, redness, discomfort, and itching. These effects should resolve themselves a week or two after treatment.

Learn More About Cosmetic Injectables

If you’re ready to take the next step in discovering whether hyaluronic acid-based fillers are a good choice to meet your aesthetic goals, contact our San Francisco practice today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Matarasso. As an experienced cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Matarasso can evaluate your needs and develop a customized plan for erasing your wrinkles and improving the quality of your skin with hyaluronic acid.

In fact, your attention should focus on the holiday festivities and not on hiding your ‘turkey neck’ as soon as the family photo shoot starts.

Also called the double chin, ‘turkey neck’ is a condition wherein fat deposits accumulate in the submental area. This causes the skin in the neck and jowls to sag. The double chin is mainly a result of obesity, weight gain, excessive weight loss, age, and genetics. Sometimes, it is due to an excess of fat cells in the chin region.

Regardless of the causes, the infamous ‘turkey neck’ is treatable using a non-surgical and non-invasive procedure called Ultherapy®. Yes, you can breathe a sigh of relief now, as you don’t need needles, lasers, or surgeries to eliminate your double chin permanently.

Indeed, Ultherapy® is the perfect Thanksgiving gift for yourself. That’s not the only reason you should try this treatment, though.

How Ultherapy® Works in Eliminating the Turkey Neck

Ultherapy® doesn’t use lasers or needles to tighten the skin. Instead, it uses sound waves to stimulate collagen production, fighting the effects of gravity and rejuvenating the skin in the neck and jowls.

Why You Should Try Ultherapy®

It’s fast acting.

Ultherapy® targets multiple layers of the skin, so you can expect to see subtle changes immediately after the treatment. You will then see significant improvements in the weeks and months that follow.

The results look natural.

The results of this treatment are subtle. It tightens your skin gradually so the changes look more natural. In addition to its natural-looking results, the treatment will leave you with zero scars. This means you don’t have to worry about hiding your neck with a scarf or a turtleneck.

The treatment is customizable.

The Ultherapy® device allows Dr. Matarasso to adjust the energy depth and treatment length to fit your needs. He can also perform this procedure with other cosmetic treatments like Botox® or Restylane® concomitantly.

It can fit your busy schedule.

The average treatment time is 30 minutes, making it possible for you to squeeze an hour of your time to get the procedure. You also don’t need downtime for this.

The result is long lasting.

The layers of your skin will continue to produce collagen even after your treatment. Overtime, you will see improvements in your neck and jowl areas that will last for several months.

Now that you know the benefits of Ultherapy®, make this Thanksgiving memorable by getting rid of your turkey neck. To learn more about Ultherapy®, and how it can help you, schedule an appointment with Dr. Matarasso today.
The post Leave the Turkey Neck for Thanksgiving – Try Ultherapy! first appeared on Dr. Seth L.
Resolve to have beautiful skin in 2016. You can reclaim a youthful, healthy glow with microdermabrasion. This treatment is non-surgical, non-chemical, and very effective. Call today and learn more.

How Does Microdermabrasion Rejuvenate the Skin?

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive treatment that rejuvenates the skin by removing the top layers of skin and thickening the collagen. Collagen loss is a primary cause of skin aging. Microdermabrasion rejuvenates the skin in many ways. It can:

Brighten Dull Skin

Improve Skin Tone

Smooth Rough Skin

Fade Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Reduce Blackheads

Treat Hyperpigmentation

Improve the Appearance of Sun Damage

Fade Scars (including acne and surgical scars)

What Happens During a Microdermabrasion Treatment?

Microdermabrasion is performed in our offices. We use a small handheld device to gently exfoliate the top layers of skin. You may feel gentle suction during treatment as the dead skin cells are removed from the surface of the skin. The procedure isn’t painful, but you may feel a slight scratching sensation on the skin. Most patients find the procedure to be very tolerable. A topical anesthetic isn’t required as the microdermabrasion is rather gentle. Treatment takes about an hour.

What Type of Recovery Should I Expect After Microdermabrasion?

After microdermabrasion you can return your regular activities immediately with no downtime. You may experience some redness or flaking the first few days after treatment, but this is typically minimal and fades quickly. We’ll provide tips to ease any discomfort and to speed the healing process. Make sure you wear sunscreen when you’re outside, especially after microdermabrasion. Results last about a month.

Smoother, brighter, rejuvenated skin is just a microdermabrasion treatment away. Call today and learn more.
The post New Year, New Skin: Recapture That Healthy Glow with Microdermabrasion first appeared on Dr. Seth L.
Start the New Year looking your best. We realize you’ll be singing “Auld Lang Syne” in just a few weeks, but you’ve still got time to rejuvenate your look. These last minute tips will have you party-ready with plenty of time to celebrate.

Botox: 15 Minute Treatment + 4 Days = A Younger Looking You

If you’ve got 15 minutes and a few days to spare, Botox can help you shine at your next soiree. This injectable treatment is a great option for fading away wrinkles caused by muscle movement, such as crow’s feet, the lines between the brows, and forehead wrinkles. Results take a few days to appear, so plan for Botox several days to a week before New Year’s Eve and start the year looking more youthful. After-treatment results should last several months.

Botox is a wonderful treatment option during the busy holiday season, as it takes just a few minutes and requires no downtime. You can resume your regular activities immediately. If you experience redness or swelling, it can often be covered with makeup.

Dysport is a similar treatment option that Dr. Matarasso may recommend for some patients. Botox and Dysport are both botulinum toxin treatments with many similarities. If you’re in a rush to see results, Dysport may be a better option; many patients see changes in just a day or two.

Get Ready for Your New Year’s Eve Smooch with Juvederm

Gorgeous lips won’t guarantee you the perfect New Year’s Eve smooch, but they can’t hurt your chances. If you want to plump up your pout, Juvederm is an excellent option. This injectable dermal filler can enhance your lips with no downtime and instant results. Many patients experience a bit of swelling, so opt for the treatment as soon as possible to ensure your lips are ripe for romance.

Juvederm is an excellent for lip enhancement because it requires no pre-treatment or downtime. The actual treatment takes just a few minutes, and Dr. Matarasso is known for his stunning, natural-looking results.

Injectable Dermal Fillers- An Instant “Facelift

If you want to instantly rejuvenate your look, come in and ask about dermal fillers. We offer several different types of fillers, including Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Juvederm, and Juvederm Voluma. These fillers are injected into the skin to lift, revolumize, fill in wrinkles, reshape, etc. Treatment is quick and generally requires no downtime.

When used by a skilled injector like Dr. Matarasso, fillers and Botox can be used to create an instant “facelift”. While the results won’t be as dramatic as a surgical treatment, they can be very natural looking and eye-catching. You can look younger before 2016. Cross that resolution off your list early this year!

Call today and schedule your pre-party treatment, as the ball will drop soon enough. You still have time, but not much!
The post Last Minute Beauty Tips for Your New Year’s Parties first appeared on Dr. Seth L.

Let’s face it… winter can be rough on skin. The cold, dry air can leave your skin looking red and irritated. What can you do? These winter skin care tips will keep your skin gorgeous, healthy, and happy all winter long.

Winter Skin Needs Moisture

If winter skin has one need, it’s moisture, and lots of it. If you’re still using your usual summer moisturizer, it’s time to change. Opt for something thicker and richer and apply it often. If you have oily skin, a moisturizer is still essential, but opt for an oil-free one so it doesn’t clog your pores.

Use a Humidifier

Winter air is naturally dry and heaters only make the problem worse. Restore moisture into the air with a humidifier in your home or office. The extra moisture in the air can make a big difference for your skin and can help it look and feel better.

Use Your Sunscreen

On overcast winter days it can be tempting to skip the sunscreen, but don’t. Up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can penetrate through clouds. Wear your sunscreen rain, snow, or shine.

If you’re hitting the slopes sun protection is especially important. The higher elevations and the sun reflecting off of the snow can increase your risk of sun damage. Wear plenty of sunscreen; you need at least a teaspoon for your face. Don’t forget your lips or your ears, commonly missed spots.

Treat Sun Damage

If you have sun damage, winter is a great time to treat it. During treatment Dr. Matarasso recommends limiting sun exposure and for many, this is easier in the winter. The Fraxel laser is one of our best options for rejuvenating the skin and treating sun damage. It can smooth and soften skin, even out skin tone, treat sun damage, fade brown spots, and more. While you’re at it, schedule a skin cancer detection appointment with Dr. Matarasso to look for any problems before they become serious.

Beautiful skin is possible during the winter, but only with a little extra care. Try these winter skin care tips or call our offices and schedule an appointment with Dr. Matarasso for personalized advice.
The post Keep Your Skin Healthy and Beautiful this Winter first appeared on Dr. Seth L.
