What Is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy San Francisco

Ultherapy® is the only non-invasive treatment that is FDA-approved to lift and tighten skin around the eyes and eyebrows, under the chin, and on the neck. And, with the addition of the new Ultherapy Décolletage Treatment, Ultherapy is also now the only non-invasive procedure specified by the FDA to improve the look of chest wrinkling.

Now, you can get effective anti-aging results from your forehead to your chest – without the need for surgery or injections.

What Makes Ultherapy So Effective?

Doctors and clinicians around the world have performed more than a million Ultherapy procedures. Patients in a 2016 clinical trial reported lifting, tightening, and fewer fine lines and wrinkles up to a year after their treatment.

So, how does Ultherapy achieve such incredible results? Unlike lasers, which target the skin’s outermost layers, Ultherapy bypasses the skin’s surface to penetrate the deepest layers of the skin with sound energy. The process is highly effective because it causes small amounts of damage to the collagen layers of the skin, which stimulates your body’s natural healing response and leads to the production of new collagen – a process known as neocollagenesis.

Because collagen is the principal structural protein in our tissue, collagen production is essential to keep your skin looking younger, longer. The warmth you feel during your Ultherapy treatment is a signal that your body’s natural healing process is going into action, stimulating the skin to produce more collagen and resulting in a visible lifting and tightening of tissue over two to three months.

Ultherapy is an excellent alternative for patients who want to look younger without the extensive healing time associated with a more invasive procedure, such as a brow lift or facelift. It’s also ideal for patients who want a more natural, gradual improvement to their appearance. Even people who have previously had cosmetic surgery are using Ultherapy to prolong the results of their procedure for a more youthful look with no pain or recovery time.

Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your Ultherapy treatment.

Before You Get Ultherapy

If you are considering Ultherapy, your first step is to book a private, one-on-one consultation with Dr. Matarasso. He will evaluate your skin to determine if you’re a good candidate for the procedure, and will also answer any questions you have about the process.

Once you’ve scheduled your Ultherapy appointment, you won’t have any special skin care regimen or pre-procedure instructions to follow.

Your Ultherapy Procedure

After cleaning your skin and identifying the areas to target, an ultrasound gel will be applied to your face or chest and the treatment applicator will be placed on your skin. By using ultrasound imaging to look deep inside your skin, our skilled team will then determine where to focus and deliver the treatment energy in targeted areas to create the most effective results.

As the treatment progresses, you will likely feel small amounts of energy being deposited, which is how you will know the collagen-building process is underway. Comfort thresholds vary among individual patients, but any feelings of discomfort only last while the ultrasound energy is being delivered. The length of the treatment will depend on the area being treated. A face and neck procedure usually takes 60 to 90 minutes, while a chest treatment takes approximately half an hour.

After You Get Ultherapy

With Ultherapy, you will have no downtime, incisions, stitches, or general anesthesia. After your procedure, you can go back to work and resume your typical daily routine immediately, with no restrictions on your activity levels.

After your treatment, your skin may look flushed, but any redness is temporary and usually goes away within a couple of hours. Some patients report tingling, swelling, or tenderness, but these effects are generally mild and usually fade away soon after treatment.

You can expect to see the results of your procedure to gradually reveal themselves over the next two to three months as your body continues to regenerate collagen. Since everyone ages differently depending on genetic factors and lifestyle choices, how long the results last will vary for you. Future Ultherapy treatments can help you keep up with your skin’s natural aging process; however, most patients only need one treatment to achieve outstanding results.

Ultherapy Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is a safe, non-surgical option for patients of all ages and skin types who are experiencing moderate skin laxity. A consultation with Dr. Matarasso will determine if Ultherapy is right for you.

What’s the difference between Ultherapy and lasers?

Ultherapy technology relies on ultrasound energy. Its unique properties allow it to reach depths other non-invasive devices can’t touch. It stimulates the foundational layers of your skin to produce new collagen, resulting in noticeably lifted and tightened the skin over a few months. Ultherapy is an FDA-approved lifting treatment.

In contrast, lasers use light energy and can only treat the top layers of skin. Lasers are also not cleared by the FDA to lift skin. However, since Ultherapy and lasers address different skin issues, the treatments can be combined to achieve even better results.

Are there any side effects of Ultherapy?

Many patients are choosing Ultherapy because they are looking for a way to improve their appearance with no interruption in their busy schedules. In fact, the procedure is nicknamed the “lunchtime lift.” Although you should expect a little redness, soreness, or swelling after you have treatment, it’s temporary and typically goes away in a few hours.

Can Ultherapy treat areas other than the face?

The FDA has cleared Ultherapy as a safe way to treat the face, neck, and chest areas. If you are considering Ultherapy treatments, contact our clinic for a professional and individualized treatment plan to help you achieve your goals for looking younger naturally
